Ferrari Brings Back the Soft Top on the 2024 Roma Spider

The convertible version of Ferrari's V-8–powered coupe is the first front-engined softtop Ferrari since 1969 and replaces the Portofino M.

For the first time since the 365GTS/4 in 1969, a Ferrari with a front engine will have a fabric top. Today, Ferrari showed off the Roma Spider, a version of its elegant V-8-powered coupe with the roof cut off and a retractable soft top put in its place. Our friends at Road and Track told us that the Portofino M has been replaced by the Roma Spider in Ferrari's lineup.

Ferrari kept most of the exterior the same, so the Roma Spider has the same long hood and smooth curves as the coupe version. The soft top can be put up in 13.5 seconds at speeds of up to 37 mph. It is made of special multi-layer fabric weaves that are woven together. The active rear spoiler was redesigned and retuned for driving without a roof. It now has three positions that increase downforce as you speed up. Ferrari also made the back of the chassis stronger, and they say that the only difference between the coupe and the Spider is 185 pounds.

The interior has the same classy look as the first Roma. It has a vertical 8.4-inch screen and a metal gear selector plate surrounded by soft leather and fake suede. Ferrari says that the buttons on the steering wheel have been changed to make them easier to use. Also, the start button now lights up red. With the top down, Ferrari made sure to reduce wind noise and turbulence by adding a 5-mm aerodynamic element to the top of the windshield and a wind deflector that pops up when you press a button and turn the backrest of the back seats. This can't be opened with people in the back, but the back of the Roma is pretty small, so we don't think this will be a big deal.

The heart of the Roma Spider hasn't changed. It still has a turbocharged 3.9-liter V-8 that sends 612 horsepower and 561 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic. Ferrari says that small changes to the gearbox save gas, and the Roma Spider comes with the latest version of the Slide Slip Control system, which controls traction and stability and lets you drift in a predictable way.
